EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON SHIP MANEUVERABILITY IN RESTRICTED WATERS-2
An analysis is made as to whether a directionally unstable ship can be stabilized in a narrow channel by the application of automatic steering or not, and what kind of control is the most suitable. The controllability of a ship under the effect of wind is investigated taking into account the variation of the hydrodynamic coefficients in the equations of motion due to the shallow water effect. It is concluded that--instability of a ship in a narrow channel is mainly due to the asymmetric hydrodynamic force and moment caused by the presence of the channel walls/ it is possible to stabilize an unstable ship in a narrow channel by introducing a simple directional control with ease/ the controllability of a ship under the effect of wind is affected by the depth of water/ and while the drifting speed of a ship under the side wind is strongly dependent on the depth of the water the helm angle necessary to make the ship drift without turning is not so strongly dependent.
