This article reviews new developments in overcoming the limits in transmitting electric power for guided ground transport. Linear induction motors now being built for America's experimental TACV represent a considerable advance on the 2,500 lb thrust LIM now being tested on standard-gauge track at Pueblo. Improvements include a fully independent suspension for the TACV motors consisting of small air cushions which bear against the reaction rail and track. Longitudinal thrust is the only force transmitted between motor and vehicle. Liquid cooling of the primary windings and the use of high-strength materials such as titanium result in a much higher power-to-weight ratio.
