Cross the way: contractor tackles runway paving with innovation
The engineering "marvel" of undertaking to extend and elevate Runway 9R-27L at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is the focus of this article. The new runway, estimated to cost $791 million at 8,000 feet long, will terminate atop a new 60-foot-tall man-made embankment and will allow the runway to cross over the Florida East Coast Railroad, U.S. Highway 1, and a new airport perimeter road and access ramps. Details of the construction project, focusing on the bridge paving, are presented.
