A study on road traffic crashes and injuries in Qatar as reported by drivers

This study examines the factors contributing to road traffic crashes (RTCs) and road traffic injuries (RTIs) in the State of Qatar. Using a sample of 1762 drivers randomly selected from Primary Health Care Centers, the authors assess questionnaire data on sociodemographics, driving history, type of vehicle driven, driver behavior, severity of motor vehicle injuries, and cause of the crash. The highest prevalence of RTIs (35%) is was found among younger drivers (25-34 years), and a significantly higher proportion of RTI is shown for men versus women. Overturn skid crashes and hitting fixed objects are found to be main types of crash, and the highest incidence of head injury is found among those injured by both light vehicles and heavy vehicles. Injured drivers are found to largely be involved with traffic violations that include exceeding speed limits, parking violations and distracted driving. The authors conclude that human behavioral factors including use of cell phones, eating/drinking, and traffic violations represent primary causes of RTIs, and they suggest that interventions should target behavior modification with regard to traffic rules and regulations.
