The impact of a national alcohol policy on deaths due to transport accidents in Russia
This article examines a set of alcohol control policies introduced in Russia in 2006 in order to determine their effect on traffic crash fatalities. The study looks at data from 2000 to 2010, showing the monthly numbers of deaths among people fifteen years and older due to road accidents, with the statistics broken down by gender. Results showed that the alcohol policies in 2006 had no impact on female deaths, but there was an immediate and sustained decrease in male fatalities due to traffic crashes. The results suggest that the alcohol control policies are responsible for saving the lives of over 2,400 men annually.
