Commuting in America 2013—Brief 11: Commuting Departure Time and Trip Time
This brief is the eleventh in a series that describes commuting in America. One of the significant defining elements of commuting is that commuter trips are conducted by travelers at similar times and are considered to be high frequency trips. They generally occur during peak travel times, usually morning and evening. Measures of peak hour traffic help to determine highway and public transit capacity, and levels of service. Work trip travel time is also an important factor in regional commuting. Travel time is determined by vehicle speed and distance traveled. This brief details the relationships among commuting, departure time and travel time, as it discusses commuting in America.
