UT CONVERTS TO ROLLER BEARINGS
In seven steps, wheelsets that have solid bearings are being converted to roller bearings in Union Tank Car Company's new $1 million conversion facility in East Chicago, Ind. Opened in April in a new building which it shares with the tank car builder and lessor's new research and development center, the 720,000-sq-ft conversion line is currently turning out 90 carsets of wheelset conversions a week. The new facility was constructed to enable Union Tank to comply with the AAR ruling that calls for all 6-1/2-in. x 12-in. journals or larger (on cars with 100-ton capacity or larger) to have roller bearings by the end of 1972. An estimated 13,000 cars are affected by this ruling.
