Impact of climate change on rutting

Rutting is one of the most often occurring damage of asphalt pavements. The process of rutting depends on many different factors. A decisive influence factor is the resilience of the asphalt against permanent deformations. This resilience depends on the mechanical characteristics of the construction material asphalt. Further rutting influencing factors are load dependent. Evidently rutting increases with increasing traffic loads. Also the speed of vehicles determines the progression of rutting. Another important influence factor is the temperature condition in the asphalt pavement. Due to the temperature dependent asphalt material characteristics the danger of rutting increases with rising asphalt temperatures. The temperature factor will be probably more and more important for the rutting progress due to the expected local and global climate changes. For years the climate change is one of the most discussed topics in public. Until now the impacts on road construction were widely disregarded. This paper confronts this problem and analyses the impacts of future climate change on rutting using a selected climate scenario.
