Background of the alcohol and traffic courses in Denmark

It appears from the Danish Road Traffic Act paragraph 60 paragraph 2, that all drivers who have a ruling on drink driving must undergo a course on alcohol and traffic (A/T course), before they can get to the driving test. All drivers have to attend the course who have had their license suspended or had a driving ban because of drink driving since March 2002. In March 2005 this system was extended to drivers with conditional suspension. There are special rules for young drivers. The purpose of the course is to change habits so that drinking and driving are not mixed again. There is much focus on the alcohol culture. The course is taught in mixed groups, each having 12 - 16 participants. It consists of 4 lessons ina total of 2.5 hours duration. The paper describes the purpose and structure of the course, the content of the plan of instruction and gives information on the method background, teachers qualifications and evaluation of A/T courses. The evaluation shows that here has been a reduction in relapse to drink driving of 40%, which clearly shows that the A/T course makes a difference.
