Comparison of the Crash Test and Simulation of an Angle Impact of a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado Pick-Up Truck into a W-Beam Transition for MASH Conditions
The National Crash Analysis Center (NCAC) at the George Washington University (GWU) simulated the AASHTO Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) Test 3-11 crash of the Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck (2270 kg) into a standard W-Beam transition to a rigid barrier. The new detailed finite element (FE) model for the Chevrolet Silverado was used as the surrogate for the MASH 2270 kg test vehicle. A finite element model of the W-Beam transition to a rigid barrier was adapted from the array of NCAC hardware models. The objectives of this effort included (1) investigating the performance of a barrier approved under NCHRP 350 relative to the MASH requirements, (2) demonstrating the viability of the FE model of a 2270 kg vehicle for MASH crashworthiness evaluation, and (3) applying the newly developed verification and validation (V&V) procedures to compare the detailed simulation results to the comparable crash test data. Comparisons of the simulation results and data derived from the crash test using “traditional” methods suggested that the model provided viable results. Further comparisons using the proposed new V&V procedures provided a structured assessment across multiple factors reflected in the Phenomena Importance Ranking Table (PIRT) tables and statistical measures of the accuracy of the test to simulation results provided a more robust validation than previous approaches. These comparisons further confirmed that the new 2270 kg vehicle model was able to effectively replicate MASH impacts and that the V&V procedures provided useful insights. The efforts did not address questions about the implications of testing under the different crashworthiness standards.
