BETHLEHEM HAS NEW WHEEL CHECKS
The AAR Mechanical Division has recently acted to require shot peening and magnetic particle inspection of both forged and cast-steel wheels, effective March 1, 1972. This specifications cover the entire range of car and locomotive wheels--one wear, two-wear and multiple wear in the differing chemistries for all types of service. Wheel manufacturers are now taking steps to comply with the new requirements and already Bethlehem Steel has opened its new automated inspection line at the wheel shop at Johnstown, Pa., where it produces forged (or wrought) steel wheels.
