Effects of Fire Damage on Steel Bridge Elements

A research project was conducted to develop inspection guidelines for bridges exposed to fire events that cause elevated temperatures but no significant visible deformations or distortions. The project developed and utilized a new testing method to evaluate the effects of fire exposures on steel plates with a variety of paint coatings approved by state highway agencies for new and existing steel bridges. The test results were used to develop an inspection manual with photographs and metrics for evaluating steel bridges exposed to fire events. The manual covers a wide variety of steels, plate thickness, and coating materials, and is being considered by state bridge inspectors in Pennsylvania and Indiana.
