Continuous Asphalt Density Measurements on a Roller
This paper demonstrates the feasibility that electromagnetic impedance technology can be used on a moving roller to effectively measure density changes on asphalt surfaces. A description of field studies at Ammann’s facilities in Switzerland in which measurements were taken with an asphalt density gauge mounted first on a hand cart and then underneath an asphalt tandem roller is presented. The testing was done with a TransTech Systems Pavement Quality Indicator 380 with the aim of determining feasibility for measuring asphalt density on a roller and complimenting the stiffness technology currently used on intelligent compaction rollers. For the first time, non-contact density measurements were taken in-motion on a roller. The presence of simulated roller water proved not to be an obstacle and the repeatability of measured densities was good. Future investigations of this on-the-run density measurement system on a roller for the hot mix asphalt in-process quality control or intelligent compaction application include: 1) evaluate the influence of asphalt temperature on the standoff measurement, 2) continue testing whether there is an effect from humidity and water layers on the asphalt, 3) ensure the accuracy of the measurement system when compacting with vibration, which can lead to slight changes in gap sizes and additional signal noise, and 4) modify sensor and data acquisition systems.
