Modeling Pedestrian Delay at Signalized Intersections Under Mixed Traffic Conditions
Enhancing pedestrian safety and the design standards of pedestrian facilities at signalized intersections requires a clear understanding of pedestrian delay model based on pedestrian crossing behaviours under mixed traffic condition. The existing delay models have been founded on some typical situations and would not always consider the behavioural constrains of pedestrians in developing countries under mixed traffic conditions. This research has been undertaken with the aim of developing a suitable pedestrian delay model for signalized intersection crosswalks in developing cities, on the basis of pedestrian crossing behaviours. The required model parameters were extracted based on the videographic survey conducted at a typical four arm signalized intersections in Mumbai, India. The developed model has three components such as waiting time delay, crossing time delay and pedestrian – vehicular interaction delay. In first component, waiting time delay was calculated by modifying HCM model. In second component, crossing time delay was estimated based on ‘Relative velocity time dilation’ theory. In third component, pedestrian-vehicular interaction delay was calculated based on developed binary logit model. The developed delay model was validated using the field data and compared with existing delay models. The new delay model provides most accurate estimation than the existing models. This new pedestrian delay model can also be used to evaluate of pedestrian level of services at signalized intersections.
