A New Approach to Evaluating Aggregate Slip Resistance in HMA

Asphalt mixture is a type of multiphase particulate material composed of aggregate, asphalt and filler. The mechanical response of hot mix asphalt (HMA) is the external reflection of aggregate slip behavior. In order to evaluate the slip resistance of aggregate in the asphalt mixture, the Aggregate Slip Device was developed and Aggregate Slip Tests (ASTs) were conducted on five asphalt mixtures for different gradations under different test conditions. Four evaluation parameters of slip failure load (Fp), failure deformation(εp), Slip modulus(E) and slip energy index(EI) obtained according to the load-displacement curves were comparatively analyzed. The effects of loading rate, test temperature and asphalt content on slip resistance of asphalt mixture are studied in this research. The results indicate EI is the best parameter evaluating the slip behavior of asphalt mixture. The effect of loading rate on parameter EI of asphalt mixture is not very significant. The slip resistance of asphalt mixtures declines continuously with the increase in temperature. What's more, the nominal maximum aggregate size is an important factor influencing slip behavior of asphalt mixture, and fine-graded mixtures have a larger EI reduction rate. With the increase in asphalt content, EI has a peak value and a valley value. When asphalt content is close to the optimum asphalt content, aggregate skeleton effect and asphalt cohesive force can all reach a high level.
