Shake Table Testing and Numerical Analyses of Seismic Responses of Mechanically Stabilized Earth Wall with Tire Derived Aggregate (TDA) Backfill
This paper presents a preliminary study on the seismic responses of a mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall with tire derived aggregates (TDA) backfill, using shake table testing and numerical modeling. The MSE wall was 1.5 m high, 1.5 m wide, and 1.3 m deep and had five equal-thickness layers. Geogrid was used as wrap-around reinforcement. The wall was built on a one-dimensional shake table and was subjected to the simulated Loma Prieta earthquake motions. Seismic design was used to verify the internal stability, and flexible boundary in the shake table testing was considered. Vertical deformations and lateral deflections of the MSE wall, lateral pressures on the TDA backfill, and accelerations in the MSE wall were recorded. The numerical model was developed using Plaxis software and simulated the exact configuration and condition as in the shake table testing. The MSE wall did not have noticeable damage and did not have excessive settlement and lateral deflection. The comparison between the numerical and the experimental results warrants further studies to improve the material characteristics and modeling techniques.
