SIMULATION OF WATERWAY RESPONSE TO POLLUTANT DISCHARGES

A simulation of the response of a flowing waterway when a polluting material is discharged into it is based on the same distributed-parameter mathematical description as a flow reactor. Correlation was obtained with experimental data when dye was fed into a river and the dye concentration was measured downstream. The model is capable of correlating river response at all points over a considerable reach, with empirical correction of only one factor to account for tributary and tidal influx.
