Marine Sanctuaries and Marine Planning: Protecting endangered marine life
The mission of U.S. national marine sanctuaries is to protect marine life in bodies of water that are active hot spots for ships and shipping. These sanctuaries are significant for biodiversity conservation and to a user community that is economically critical. Because of the conflicting goals of protecting wildlife and keeping the shipping routes open and viable, sanctuary management can be tricky. This article examines marine planning, separating whales and ships, working with stakeholder and governmental organizations, and the use of ship automatic identification systems and acoustic detection buoys, in the light of the aforementioned issues.
