The Third Mode: Towards a Green Society
As important to transportation as highways and mass transit, walking and bicycling are unique forms of mobility and can be considered to represent a "third mode" of transportation. This book focuses on the thought process that is required in order to integrate this mode of transport into the modern world - understanding why non-motorized mobility is important for transportation. The thought process is called The Third Mode (TTM), and the ways in which it can lead to a more connected, healthy and sustainable society are explained in this book. Better connections between people, nature and the built environment can be created by society, as seen through TTM. It is the author's belief that better planning and design are key to a sustainable future. He aims to show that progress towards a green society can be made through simple solutions, like walking and bicycling. The author presents his experiences in the non-profit, public and private sector as important lessons.
