Two-Way Slab Parking Structures in Canada

Reinforced concrete parking structures in parts of Canada require special attention in terms of design, construction, and maintenance due to the use of chlorides in deicing chemicals. The cold climate requires the use of deicing chemicals, but chlorides may have a harmful effect on reinforced concrete. Older reinforced concrete parking structures were not properly designed for such conditions and show deterioration after only a few years. Many structures are liable to progressive collapse after a punching shear failure. This article reviews factors that can affect the structural safety of two-way slab parking structures in Canada, looking at the inadequacy of older design codes, construction defects, design errors, deterioration, and overloading.
