Foundations for Highway Structures
This booklet was prepared with the intention of acquainting new engineers and inspectors with the types of foundations used or proposed for use on structures under the jurisdiction of the Iowa State Highway Commission and the more pertinent items involved in their construction. Since the great majority of Iowa’s bridges are founded on piling, piles and pile driving constitute a majority of the topics discussed. The opinions and recommendations presented are based on experiences with pile driving and foundation problems covering some twenty years. The information acquired through pile driving observations and pile loading tests during the first half of this period led to improvements in soils exploration practices and pile length determination. It is hoped that the booklet will not only informative but stimulate an interest in the subject of foundations leading to continuing improvements in both their design and construction.
