DIMENSIONING OF TUNNEL LININGS

The tunnel lining represents a type of foreign body in the rock. As a result of the interactions which take place the problem of dimensioning the tunnel lining is a statically indeterminate one. The determination of the deformability and rigidity characteristics of the tunnel lining represents a static problem into which we will not go further here. This paper is intended to clarify the static conditions with regard to constructional process and to make a contribution to the solution of the problem of the designing and dimensioning of the lining. As will be seen, this involves an approximation method which nevertheless should suffice for the practical solution of most problems.
