Plant Management of RAP/RCA
Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) have become increasingly common materials in road construction. Road agencies have been accepting them more and more in their specs. However, RAP and RCA must be processed and characterized in order to be used in mixes. RAP and RCA can be used reliably in pavement mixes and road bases when they are treated like virgin aggregates. Stockpiles of RAP should be sheltered because RAP absorbs water more easily than virgin aggregates. It may be necessary to fractionate RAP, which breaks down the material in order to produce more uniform gradations. RCA is often processed at the demolition contractor's equipment yard or at the demolition site. The material is sold by the demolition contractor and has been neither tested nor screened. Correct processing and storage allow RAP and RCA to be useful aggregates.
