The State of the Nation's Bridges
This article examines bridge conditions across the United States. The percentage of bridges that are functionally obsolete (FO) or structurally deficient (SD) is on the decline. However, the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act, a bill that has guaranteed funding for transportation projects, is set to expire in 2014, and a lack of funding is the biggest obstacle for lowering the number of FO and SD bridges in the country. Despite this, many states expect to continue lowering their number of FO and SD bridges. The article reports on bridge conditions in each state, looking at their percentages of FO and SD bridges and comparing them with the rest of the country.
