POSSIBILITIES OF MEASURING THE WALL SHEAR STRESS IN SHIP MODELS
Direct methods, indirect methods (determination of wall shear stress from the momentum loss on the boundary layer, determination of wall shear stress from the velocity gradient), and electrical methods (the Ludwieg wall shear stress measuring instrument, measurement of wall shear stress by means of hot-foil transducers) were described insofar as these apply to the determination of wall shear stress in ship models. It was shown that the currently employed method involving plate friction is no longer adequate. One of the methods reviewed, another method, or a combination of the methods reviewed should be established as the method of the future. The importance of establishing the local flow directions was stressed.
