A Basic Study of Economic Valuation of a Passenger Boat Line by Local Residents - Case Study of the Akizuki-Kure Line Connecting the Etajima Island with Kure City -

There are many small islands in the Seto-Inland Sea. The depopulation and population aging on these islands have caused the amount of people who use ferry and passenger boat lines which connect between these islands and the main island to decrease dramatically. Because of this, some of the lines have been on the verge of closing their services and some of them are already given subsidy from the local government in order to maintain their services. Validity of such a subsidy and an amount of it has to be investigated on the basis of contribution of the line to the areas and its economic valuation, but that has never been done. The Akizuki-Kure Line, which is the subject of this study, was once decided to close under this condition, although it has been kept in operation at the present time. In this study, a questionnaire survey to the people in the Akizuki area in the Etajima Island in which the port of the line is located was carried out and the situation of contribution of the line to the island and its economic valuation by the people in the area are analyzed on the basis of the data obtained from this survey.
