SUCCESSFUL WELDING OF THIN-WALLED VENTILATION DUCTS WITH THE AID OF THE SHORT ARC METHOD
Plant tests showed that welding by the short-arc method is a suitable technique for thin plate in general and thin-walled ships ventilation ducts in particular. The gas mixture used in the tests was 75 percent argon and 25 percent carbon dioxide; the auxiliary wire had a diameter of 0.8 mm. The welding units used were Model MSH-K and Welding Rectifier KGS 160/ZIS 440; the MSH-IV did not perform well in this application. Maximum plate thickness employed in the tests was 3 mm. Any wire-advancing apparatus was found to be suitable provided that it ensured uniform advance rates. The principal feature of the short arc method is a continuously advancing electrode operating under a protective gas cover.
