LEDDARTM Technology for Efficient Automatic Vehicle Classification Sensor
Within recent years, the authors have seen an evolution in market of the toll collection by the installation of multi-lane free-flow (MLFF) electronic toll collection (ETC) system. With the objectives of minimizing the constraint for the users, increasing the mobility (maximum throughput on the highway) and maximizing the flexibility in the toll collection process, several governments plan to migrate from the well-known manual toll/single lane restricted flow to the MLFF. The use of Leddar™ Sensor for vehicle detection and classification purposes is steadily increasing and companies like Safran/Morpho (5) and United Toll System (6) are offering detection and classification systems for single lane and multi-lane environments. In that context, technologies used in ETC systems need to be extremely reliable notably within the Automatic Vehicle Classification (AVC) system. This paper presents a new technology based on light emitting diode (LED) sensing that can accomplish classification at high speed with the advantages of easy installation, long lifetime and robust performance in bad weather condition. Leddar™ is the 3D sensing technology that is the most adaptable open platform with the widest range of performance criteria.
