Portland Limestone Cement Equivalent Strength Explained

This article demonstrates the mechanisms that allow portland limestone cement (PLC) mixtures to maintain the same level of strength as portland cement (PC) mixtures. The use of PLC is being increasingly adopted to reduce the carbon footprint involved in the manufacture of PC. When PLC is manufactured at equivalent performance, it reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 10%. The main reason for PLC's equivalent strength is its increased fineness. This result was reached by industrial trials conducted in Canada that were held to determine the feasibility of equivalent strength PLC before PLC was fully industrialized. The trials showed that it is possible to produce PLC of an equivalent strength to PC.
