Development of a Tollgate Entrance Control Model for Expressway Traffic Flow Management Using a Stochastic Optimization
This study was initiated to mitigate chronic and recurring traffic congestion in expressways during peak hours, weekends, and holidays, using the tollgate entrance control which has been implemented in some expressways in Korea. To this end, the research team developed a new methodology for the tollgate entrance control. The methodology was embedded in a tollgate entrance control model which can analyses the effect of the tollgate entrance control and provides to traffic operators in the traffic management center. With useful information in addition, the performance of the new methodology was compared with that of the methodology in use using the tollgate entrance control model. As a result, the new methodology outperformed the existing methodology, improving travel speeds by 11.7% on average.
