A Study on Congestion Threshold Using Volume-Speed Graph (Break Point) Analysis in Urban Freeway
Most of traffic management systems operated in Korea provide 3 types of traffic status information such as smooth flow, part congestion, congestion, etc., along with travel time taken to reach the end point. In order to provide above 3 types of traffic status, 2 threshold values differentiating light traffic, moderate traffic and heavy traffic. Such values are implemented as standard value indicating speed of traffic flow. Therefore, the study wants to discard method of applying uniform speed in making decision of congestion without considering characteristic of each sector and wants to propose a detailed method for establishing standard for congestion judgment according to unique traffic characteristics of specific sections in example. After establishing standard for resources categorization and analysis method to be implemented by the study, the researcher will be selecting target section for conducting analysis. After deriving dispersion on correlation among traffic variables collected by detector, the researcher will qualitatively analyze such dispersion and investigate method for determining Break Point (Analysis) that distinguishes normal flow with congestion.
