Estimation of Traffic Signal Parameters by FCD

The paper focuses on the estimation of traffic signal phases by floating car data. First, by employing delay model, the velocity-time curve of each vehicle is approximated by Piecewise Linear Curves (PLC), which can help to obtain the Status-Change Time (SCT) and the Distance between the vehicle’s stopping point and the signal (DSS). Then, Green Beginning Time (GBT) of signal is estimated from any vehicle passing by this signal and a collection of GBTs is gathered from all vehicles passing by this signal. Then all estimated GBTs is sorted according to time and the Difference for any pair of neighbour GBTs (DGBT) is calculated. The histogram of these DGBTs shows that most locate around the cycle length of the given signal, so the cycle length can be calculated correspondingly. Besides, the cycle length for different time period may be different. On the other hand, the Continuous Waiting Time (CWT) for each vehicle can be obtained through the approximated PLC. When there is traffic jam before the signal, the maximum of CWTs from all vehicles passing by this signal can estimate the Red Time of the signal. Experimental results prove that the estimation of traffic signal parameters is efficient and reliable.
