Memphis Link to the Mighty Mississippi
The city of Memphis, at the widest point of the Mississippi River, is ideally positioned to handle boat traffic. This article describes Memphis’s new Beale Street Landing, which offers a world-class docking facility for passenger boats. The landing also features a terminal building and public park. The construction of the landing featured several civil engineering challenges, including a project site that was submerged regularly due to the yearly river stage cycle and a complex bank stabilization effort. Because the landing is designed to accommodate the changing nature of the river, it should serve the needs of the city for many years.
