3D Distance Measurement Method Using Vehicle-mounted Multi Cameras for Parking and Starting Supporting System
To make parking and starting (initial movement) of a vehicle easier, the authors developed a support system that can help drivers perceive the distance to surrounding obstacles. The authors monitoring system can show wraparound images captured by multiple cameras mounted on the vehicle. The system measures the 3D distances to surrounding obstacles and overlays their shapes and positions on a display device. To detect surrounding obstacles, the authors propose a robust motion stereo method that can estimate the distance of a moving vehicle (base line) accurately, which is necessary for accurate distance measurements via motion stereo techniques. The authors proposed method is effective even if there are obstacles around the vehicle, which are unresolved problems for conventional motion stereo methods. The authors demonstrated that the method is effective through comparison of distance measurement errors to surrounding obstacles (vehicles) in parking situations.
