Risky business
Insurers have begun tracking individual cars for Usage Based Insurance (UBI) and have been using the same technology to enhance consumer services. There has been an increase in drivers signing up for UBI, in which the policy premium is determined by dynamic parameters such as mileage, time of day, location, and driver behavior. Most insurers install a sensor black box or an OnBoard Diagnostic system in the vehicle, with which they can access data collected from the vehicle. The devices collect predictive data that will identify risky behavior, though insurers disagree on what data is most predictive. So far, UBI is most common in the United States, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
