Chicago automates enforcement to deter Safety Zone speeding
The Chicago Department of Transportation is making an effort to improve child safety by implementing Children's Safety Zones around schools and other areas where children are likely to be. These zones allow speeds up to 20 mph, since data from the Federal Highway Administration shows that a pedestrian hit by a car at that speed has a 95% chance of living. The Children's Safety Zones speed limit is enforced on weekdays during school hours. Pilot studies for the program were conducted in high traffic volume areas. The tests confirmed that speeding was a serious issue, and city officials established twelve Children's Safety Zones. Fifty cameras will be installed by the end of 2013.
