Learning lessons from the London Olympics
Preparing London for the Olympics in 2012 took four years of planning and traffic pattern analysis. Hosting the Olympics is a major logistical undertaking for a city. An Olympic Route Network was created on the city's roads, including "Games Lanes" to be used exclusively by athletes and other Olympics officials. There was a total of more than 12 million spectators, with approximately 800,000 additional travelers in the city on peak days. The intelligent transportation systems and logistics sectors were required to undertake detailed planning and come up with innovative operating solutions. The extensive planning resulted in the smooth running of the city during the Games. Authorities in Japan and Brazil are studying London's success in an attempt to learn from it in time to host the Olympics themselves.
