Rail's starring role in the seamless journey
The All Ways Travelling consortium was appointed by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport in order to validate a retail and fulfillment model for a multimodal pan-European passenger transport information and booking system, which would facilitate cross-border journeys. The consortium's plans are outlined here, including an in-depth study of multimodality from a variety of perspectives with potential European Union (EU) policy interventions, and moving along to a second stage consisting of trials for a series of proofs of concept to assess business models, operations and specific technologies identified as critical for market delivery. Also to be addressed is the extent to which smart technology might integrate multimodal travel services and multi-standard urban transport applications, as well as the subsequent impact this may have on emergent business strategies. A specific role is envisioned for rail serving as the middle link between air travel and different modes of ground transport.
