Applications of Weigh-In-Motion in Pavement Engineering
This paper focuses on challenges to pavement design and the advantage and disadvantages of various design methods and data. Using four examples, the author discusses: 1) the simplification of input in a mechanistic empirical pavement design method (MEPDG) through a pre-established database on traffic loading, climate conditions and materials specifications; 2) the importance of accurate data and the use of site-specific traffic data for pavement design; 3) differences amongst various pavement design methods; and 4) the importance of proper calibration of Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) systems in pavement design.
