Weigh-In-Motion on the Köhlbrand Bridge in the Port of Hamburg
This paper focuses on the weigh-in-motion (WIM) system that was installed on the Köhlbrand bridge by the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and Traffic Data Systems GmbH (TDS). The cable-stayed bridge, which spans 3,618m and connects the port of Hamburg with highway A7, carries vehicles up to 40 tons traveling at a maximum speed of 50 km/h. Any vehicles weighing more than 40 tons must obtain a special permit. Inconsistencies in the number of permits led HPA to install the WIM system to monitor traffic. Here, the authors examine the WIM pre-installation analysis, installation, and results of ongoing permanent measurement.
