Benefits of Correct Lubrication of Switches and Crossings
Switches, crossings, and other items of equipment must operate dependably at all times and in all weather conditions so as not to cause severe disruptions to the smooth and punctual operation of the railway. As in every situation where the central issue is to reduce friction, the choice of the most appropriate lubricant can not only improve the reliability of switches and crossings but can reduce overall costs of maintenance. Due to the significant labor costs for manually lubricating switches and crossings, it is necessary that there be long intervals between applications in order to reduce total maintenance cost. Consequently, higher performance lubricants that need to be applied less frequently could significantly reduce the overall maintenance costs to ensure the reliable operation of crossings and switches.
