Paving for Horse and Buggy
This article profiles Brooks Construction’s paving of a 2.5 mile stretch of State Route 5, which runs through Amish Country in Shipshewana, Indiana. The work, which received an award from the National Asphalt Pavement Association, involved patching ruts, milling the surface and repaving the road and shoulders that had been damaged by large volumes of horse and buggy traffic that travels the road. The job’s unique challenges included clearing the surface of horse manure daily and facing workday restrictions due to flea markets events. A hot mix with steel furnace slag was used for the pavement, and the impact of the use of this mix in the bidding process is also described.
