INTERMODAL TRAFFIC BOOMING IN PORTS OF NORTH AMERICA

With no fewer than 14 containership, lash and roll-on/roll-off carriers using its vast facilities, the Port of New York is secure in its claim of being the number one intermodal port of North America, and possibly of the entire world. Last year 549,731 containers moved through the port carrying a staggering 7,244,735 tons of cargo. This represented an increase over the 1971 figures of 457,614 units and 6,255,094 tons. Motive force behind the development of the New York port has been the bi-state Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, an autonomous public agency which, in addition to its responsibilities for port activities, also controls airports, bridges, tunnels and a mass transit subway system beneath the Hudson River.
