A maze of small crisscrossed piles form a protective umbrella system for a rail tunnel being dug only a few yards from multistory apartment buildings in Salerno, a regional port about 25 miles south of Naples, Italy. At the same time, the piles underpin building foundations along the tunnel route. The piles are the principal components of a patented foundation system which starts by setting steel casings either vertically or askew. A steel grid system then holds them in place.
