ON THE METHODOLOGY OF INVESTIGATING GROWTH ORGANISMS ON SHIPS BOTTOMS AND HARBOR INSTALLATIONS
The macroscopically observable growth of underwater growth colonies is always preceded by a primary growth in the microscopic range. A device was developed with the aid of which this primary growth can be readily established, providing a means for the forecasting of the growth tendency of a protective coating or any surface intended for underwater use. A growth probe is used, made from a poly(vinyl chloride) frame with 50 individual platelets of microscopic slide size. The probe can be immersed at various depths and examined under the microscope after a period of exposure. The device was described and illustrated.
