DESIGN OF CROSS SECTION OF EARTH EMBANKMENTS

SUBSOIL CONDITIONS IN THE WESTERN PART OF THE NETHERLANDS CONSISTING OF PEAT AND CLAY LAYERS WITH LITTLE BEARING CAPACITY RESTING ON PLEISTOCENE SAND ARE USED FOR DETERMINING THE DESIGN OF EMBANKMENTS. FIELD INVESTIGATIONS WITH THE AID OF A GEOLOGICAL MAP AND THE DETERMINATION OF SOUNDING RESISTANCE SHOULD ESTABLISH: (1) THE DEPTH AND THICKNESS OF THE STRATA, (2) THE LOCATIONS AND DEPTHS OF UNDISTURBED SAMPLES, (3) THE GROUND WATER LEVEL, AND (4) THE HYDRAULIC PRESSURE IN THE DEEPER SAND-LAYERS. THE SETTLEMENT, WHICH TAKES PLACE AFTER CONSTRUCTION, IS DERIVED BY COMPUTATIONS TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION SUCH FACTORS AS CROSS SECTION CAUSED BY LOSS OF EQUILIBRIUM INVOLVING A COMPARISON OF THE COMPUTED SHEARING RESISTANCES. MR. HATCH COMMENTS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION OR THE ANGLE OF INTERNAL FRICTION REMAINING CONSTANT WITH INCREASING MOISTURE AND INCREASING VERTICAL PRESSURES.
