SETTLEMENT STUDIES FOR THE CHESAPEAKE AND DELAWARE CANAL RAILROAD BRIDGE
The settlement studies were made for a large lift bridge. Because of the rather unusual subsurface and loading conditions, settlement predictions were for the bridge to heave rather than settle. Subsequent field information verified the predicted heave. This paper discusses the special consolidation techniques and the detailed analysis of unloading and loading conditions used to arrive at the heave predictions.
