Pile Testing and Settlement Prediction
This paper describes a process by which pile load test data can be used to assist in the prediction of pile foundation settlements. In the interpretation of the load test results, the critical importance of making allowance for the load test setup and possible interaction effects is emphasized, because of the potential for over-estimation of pile stiffness. Two examples are given, one of an unsuccessful use of pile load test data for pile foundation settlement prediction, and the other of a more successful outcome. The reasons for the unsuccessful prediction are examined. It is found that successful prediction of the test pile settlement does not guarantee that the overall settlement of the foundation system will be predicted successfully.
