GAS TURBINE LOCOCOTIVE DEVELOPMENT IN RUSSIA
Proposals in 1912 led ten years later to projects by Ing. A.N. Shelest embodying gas turbines of which one prototype was built but not until 1935 was a conventional gas turbine locomotive placed in test service. Pioneer work continued elsewhere until 1957-59 when Kolomna Works produced its 3,000 hp prototypes and currently projects of 6,000 hp are under consideration. Meanwhile Lugansk has a 1,150 hp gas turbine under test for locomotive applications.
