Signalized Intersection Safety Spacing of Two-Lane Arterial Highway

By analyzing the traffic character of the link between two signalized intersections of two-lane arterial highway, an analysis method for intersection safety spacing is presented. According to this method, a safety spacing of signalized intersection consists of the traffic stable distance and the up-stream functional area length. When determining the traffic stable distance, the headway is supposed to obey the shifted negative exponential distribution, an influence function between traffic under dispersion stable state at the up-stream exit, and the modal describe how it differs from the section distance. By analyzing the exist data, the headway threshold limit is determined; the parameter of the influence function is estimated at the basis of the field survey data, thereby the modal of the universal influence function vary from the section distance between traffic of two-lane arterial highway. Then, take the section which slope is –0.1 for the beginning of the dispersion stable state, the traffic stable distance of each access category is determined. Thinking together with the up-stream functional distance, the safety minimizing spacing is presented.
